- The 2010 football World Cup is the 19th FIFA World Cup
- The tournament will run from 11 June to 11 July 2010 in South Africa
- Qualification started in August 2007 with 204 participating national teams.
- It equals the 2008 Olympics as the sporting event made up of the most competing countries.
- This is the first time that the World Cup has been hosted in the continent of Africa
- Although qualified as hosts South Africa played in the World Cup qualifiers because they doubled as qualifiers for the 2010 African Cup of Nations
- Total prize money for the 2010 World Cup is $420 million with $30 million going to the winning team.
- The official mascot for the 2010 World Cup is a leopard with green hair called Zakumi.
- The 2010 FIFA World Cup match ball is made by Adidas and called the “Jabulani”,
- Games will be played at 10 venues – Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Polokwane, Rustenburg and Nelspruit
