I’ve often been intrigued by the fact that football, of all the sports and of all the passions in the world, is the one thing which seems to know no boundaries…is completely accessible to everyone. Loving football doesn’t mark you out as one kind of person, because anyone is free to play it; anyone seems to be happy to play it, too – just look at any toddler as soon as he or she has learned to stand. And for those who don’t play…the pleasure of watching is just as great.

Pele’s description seemed to warrant a tribute, because it encapsulated what I had always felt about his game. Actually, writing the lyrics was easy, because there wasn’t a single no-go area: it really is a totally inclusive, world-wide experience.
